In 1986, Christine Stäps (b. 1940) traveled to Paris with artist Ellen Fuhr (1958-2017) to oversee the exhibition Femmes-artistes de la R.D.A. From March 12 to April 23, 1986, works by 19 women artists, including Stäps and Fuhr, were presented at the Centre Culturel de la République Démocratique Allemande.

The painter, graphic artist and sculptor Christine Stäps moved to Schwerin in 1967 after studying painting and graphics at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden, today she lives in Grambow. In a written interview from September 2022, Christine Stäps describes impressions of her trip to Paris in 1986.

  • In 1986 you traveled to Paris together with Ellen Förster in the course of the exhibition Femmes-artistes de la R.D.A. What was the purpose of this trip?
    As a participant in the exhibition "Femmes-artistes de la R.D.A.", this trip was connected with the task of being a supervisor and an interlocutor: Supervisor and interlocutor.
  • Was the exhibition flanked by a program, were you involved in the program in any other way besides your sculptures that were on display?
    Independently of the exhibition, there were also events, lectures, small music evenings (Prof. Feist, Prof. Breuer on Baroque poetry).
  • What was the reaction in Paris to the works of the female artists from the GDR?
    The reactions were good. The visitors were numerous and school classes also came to the exhibition.
  • Were you able to meet other artists on site? How was the contact with the people?
    There were no encounters with French artists in the exhibition. But there were overwhelming encounters in great museums.
  • When we talked about your trip to Tajikistan, you told me that you are not a person who absolutely needs to travel. Did this trip change that feeling?
    This trip also increased my non-travel desire.
